Who Is Muhammad?

Muslims believe that the last prophet sent by God to mankind was Muhammad, peace and blessings of God be upon him. At 40 years old, he received the revelation of God. Since then, he spent the rest of his life explicating, and living the commandments of Islam.

The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings of God be upon him , personified the greatest of all prophets for numerous reasons, but primarily because ihe was chosen by God to be the last prophet — whose mission to guide humankind continue until the Last Day — and because he was sent as a mercy to all mankind. The effect of his mission has brought in more people into the pure belief in One God than any other prophet.

From the earliest times, God had sent prophets to the world, each to his specific people. However, the Prophet Muhammad was sent as the final Messenger to all of mankind.

While other religious communities lay claim to believe in One God, across time some ideas have entered into corrupt practices and beliefs of removing them pure and sincere prophets preached monotheism. Some took their prophets and saints as intermediaries with Almighty God. Some even thought that their prophets were manifestations of God, “God Incarnate” or the “Son of God”. All these misconceptions contribute to the adoration of created beings instead of the Creator, and contributed to the idolatrous practice of believing that Almighty God can be approached through intercessors.

To protect their followers from these falsifications, the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings of God be upon him, emphasised that he was only a human being with the charge of preaching and obeying the message of God. He instructed Muslims to refer to him as ” the Messenger and Servant of God”.

Throughout his life and teachings, God made Muhammad, peace and blessings of God be upon him, the clear model for all of humanity; an exemplar of a prophet, national leader, military leader, ruler, instructor, neighbour, husband, father and friend. Contrary to other prophets and messengers, the Prophet Muhammad lived in the full light of history, and all his words and actions were carefully recorded and preserved.

Muslims need not just have “faith” that he existed, or that his teachings were continued, but they know through science and history that was indeed the case. God revealed to Muhammad that He will protect the Message and it will be prevented from being distorted, lost or forgotten. This was essential because God assured that Muhammad, peace and blessings of God be upon him, would be the last Messenger to mankind.

All Messengers of God preached the message of Islam — that is, submission and surrender to the laws of God and the worship of the one God — but Muhammad, peace and blessings of God be upon him, is the last prophet who brought the final and complete message would not be altered until the Day of Judgement.
