What is the religion of Islam?

Islam is the name of religion or more properly the way of life that God has revealed and which was applied by all the Prophets and Messengers sent to humanity. The actual name of the religion leaps out amongst the other faiths as it means a state of being; it does not refer to any particular person such as Christianity, Buddhism or Zoroastrianism; a tribe like Judaism; or a nation like Hinduism. The Arabic language root from which comes the word Islam means peace, safety, salutation, protection, guiltlessness, wellness, submission, deliverance, acceptation, yielding and redemption. Who is the God of Islam?

Often the word Allah is mentioned when talking about the God of Islam. The word “Allah” is merely the transliteration of the Arabic word for God Almighty, and it is the equivalent name used by Christians and Arabic-speaking Jews. Who is Muhammad?

Muslims believe that the last prophet sent by God to mankind was Muhammad, peace and blessings of God be upon him. At 40 years old, he received the revelation of God. Since then, he spent the rest of his life explicating, and living the commandments of Islam. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings of God be upon him , personified the greatest of all prophets for numerous reasons, but primarily because ihe was chosen by God to be the last prophet — whose mission to guide humankind continue until the Last Day — and because he was sent as a mercy to all mankind. The effect of his mission has brought in more people into the pure belief in One God than any other prophet. From the earliest times, God had sent prophets to the world, each to his specific people. Who are the Muslims?

The Arabic word Muslim means one who is in a state of Islam (willing submission and surrender to the will and law of God). The substance of Islam is universal, and anybody who accepts this message becomes a Muslim. A lot of people erroneously believe that Islam is a religion only for the Arabs, but nothing could be farther from the truth. As a matter of fact, over 80% of the world’s Muslims are not Arabs. Although most Arabs are Muslims, there are also Arab Christians, Jews and atheists. If given a look at the diverse people who live in the Muslim world — from Nigeria to Bosnia and from Morocco to Indonesia — it is effortless to ascertain that Muslims come from dissimilar races, ethnic groups, cultures and nationalities.
